Project Cape Epic 2018 - part 2

We, Cornelia and Hielke are sharing one big passion: mountain biking! Pushing ourselves to the limits in marathon races is something we love. That’s why we want to conquer the ultimate stage race in South Africa together once again. Follow us on our journey called ‘project Cape Epic’. Riding as team Shimano S-PHYRE.

Since our last blog time passed by very fast! Recovering from the trainingcamp in Gran Canaria and getting the daily life things organized again. Being in the 100% athlete mode during trainingcamp was great. It helped us to do high quality training and get our focus on South Africa.

Coming back home and arranging the normal work- life balance makes you feel you haven't been away at all! But it was good to be at home and feel the winter once again. Although it was late February, winter was coming back in full force, like you might have experienced by yourself as well! But this was so nice. The contrast between summer conditions and intense winter can be beautiful. We both see it as a huge privilege to go out ski-mountaineering in the morning and do some proper intervals on the rollers in the afternoon.

After the work is done, the fresh powder downhill is waiting on us! WOW!

Also we got to pick-up our Shimano S-PHYRE kits, shoes and parts for our bikes. It's hard to describe these feelings in words. It's just awesome!! To test it in better conditions Hielke drove to Italy for a few training rides. Installing the cleats and making the first kilometers with those new shiny shoes just makes you excitied and proud even more!

So after a good winter full of training, all of a sudden it was already time to fly to Cape Town again. We arrived in Stellenbosch just before the Cross Country World Cup, which was a good opportunity to get to know the South African Shimano crew, Coolheat. A few of them will also be at the Cape Epic next week. After finetuning and installing a few last parts we were ready to go out for a trainride. Thanks for the help guys, see you next week!

And after all necessary preparations the fun part really started. Getting used to the temperatures, the dusty trails, the sand and enjoying the moment. This means we got to train on the best trails out there. We really love the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. It's a true paradise with the best conditions. In addition these days also were the first mountainbike rides in our new kit. We are both amazed. The 'riding position' feels very natural in these jerseys.

In order to activate our bodies and getting used to the conditions a bit more we still have some training to do the coming days. But also we will try to relax and recover as good as possible too. For that we found the best place ever. We are staying in a lovely guesthouse with very nice people in the centre of Stellenbosch. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the house has a little garden where spending time feels like being in an "oasis of peace". Later on this week we will tell you more about the very last steps before the Cape Epic starts!

Cheers, Cornelia and Hielke Elferink
